The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise won their first trophy as RCB women bagged the WPL 2024 trophy. They defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by 8 wickets in the low scoring match. RCB locked horns with DC in the WPL 2024 final on Sunday. They were asked to bowl first after losing the toss.
DC opener Shafali Verma helped DC score 61 runs in the power play without losing any wickets. But Shafali got out in Molineux bowling after smashing 44 runs in 27 balls. After that, Molineux also sent Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey to the pavilion. After losing the top three star batters one after another, the rest of the batters couldn’t score many runs. DC bundled out for 113 runs in 18.3 overs.
While facing the RCB’s tight bowling, the DC batters struggled to take even singles. RCB spinner Shreyanka Patil scalped four wickets and conceded only 12 runs. Molineux bagged three wickets and Asha Sobhana took two key wickets.
Chasing 114, RCB’s openers Smriti Mandhana (31 runs off 39 balls) and Sophie Devine (32 runs off 27 balls) steered the innings cautiously. After Sophie’s dismissal, Smriti and Ellyse Perry (35 off 37 balls) made valuable contribution to the chase. Smriti got dismissed in the 15th over to Minnu Mani.
After that, Perry took the responsibility to lead the chase and was joined by Richa Ghosh (17 not out off 14 balls). Perry’s calm and cautious innings helped RCB cross the finish line securely as they chased down the target with 3 balls remaining.
