After the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the Chandigarh mayoral election was overturned by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi poked fun at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Masih is merely a pawn in the larger plot of the BJP to destroy democracy. The Congress Member stated on X that Modi is the personification of it. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge reacted to the decision by saying,
“The Supreme Court has rescued Democracy from the teeth of an autocratic BJP, which resorted to shady election manipulation.” The Modi-Shah clan’s crafty plot to subvert democracy is far more than the institutional sabotage in the #ChandigarhMayorPolls,” Rahul Gandhi said.
He added, “We, the Indian people, must unite to resist this assault on our Constitution. Never overlook. In the Lok Sabha Elections of 2024, our democracy will be at a crossroads. The chief of the Congress party responded to Gandhi’s criticism on social media after the Supreme Court ruled that Kuldeep Kumar, the candidate of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), had won the Chandigarh mayoral election on January 30.
Together, Congress and the AAP had run for office. The bench of the supreme court, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, declared, “We order and direct that the election result, as declared by the presiding officer Anil Masih, will stand set aside and the petitioner (Kuldeep Kumar) will be declared elected as the Mayor of the Chandigarh municipal corporation.”
After determining that there were significant irregularities in the way the January 30 election was conducted, the highest court also mandated that Anil Masih, the returning officer, be prosecuted.
The bench declared that Masih’s attempt to intentionally tamper with eight ballot papers was obvious. Manoj Sonkar, the BJP candidate, defeated the AAP-Congress alliance candidate with ease in the mayoral election.
This came about because the returning officer ruled eight of the coalition partners’ votes to be invalid, sparking allegations of ballot fraud. However, Sonkar later resigned, and three AAP council members joined the BJP.
