The Calcutta High Court issued its verdict on Tuesday, transferring the case investigation of Shahjahan Sheikh, the former Trinamool Congress leader, who is facing charges of extortion, land grabbing, and sexual assault in Bengal’s Sandeshkhali region, to the CBI.
While announcing the verdict, the High Court bench led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam said that “there can be no better case than this, which requires to be transferred to the CBI for the investigation.
The bench also commented that the state police were “totally biased” and called for a fair, honest, and complete investigation into the case.
Earlier, the state’s highest court ordered the formation of a special investigative team (SIT) by the CBI and state police officials. However, challenging this verdict, the state government requested to hand over the case to the state police.
Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate also moved to the HC, appealing to restrict the involvement of the state police in the case and to hand it over to the central agency.
After the HC’s verdict, the state govt swiftly moved to the Supreme Court to challenge the order. But the top court said that it would only proceed per the rules and turned down the appeal for an immediate hearing.
Subsequently, the SC guided the senior advocate, Abhishek Singhvi, to mention the plea before its Registrar-General first.
