Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) struggles continued in IPL 2024, despite talismanic batter Virat Kohli shining consistently. They were comprehensively defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by seven wickets in their third match of IPL 2024. RCB star Virat Kohli displayed his customary brilliance with a well-compiled 83, but the rest of the RCB batting lineup faltered. They left the talismanic batsman with precious little support throughout the innings.
After asked to bat first by KKR, Kohli stitched a promising 65-run partnership with Cameron Green. But, Green’s dismissal triggered a collapse for RCB. Glenn Maxwell failing to capitalize two dropped catches of him. The middle order offered minimal resistance, leaving Kohli stranded as RCB could only manage a below-par 182 on the board.
While the score may have seemed defendable on a high-scoring ground like the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, KKR chased it down with ease. This highlighted the inadequacy of the total. However, the bigger concern for RCB was the lack of support for Kohli, as pointed out by legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.
“Just tell me, how much Virat Kohli alone will do?” Gavaskar questioned. “Someone should accompany him. If someone gave a proper support to him, he would definitely have scored 120 runs instead of 83. Cricket is a team sport, not a one-man game, and he didn’t get any support from his teammates.”
Gavaskar’s comments resonated with many fans, who witnessed Kohli’s frustration as wickets tumbled around him. The former Indian captain’s call for better partnerships and contributions from the entire batting unit is a crucial point for RCB to address if they are to turn their fortunes around in IPL 2024.
