Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting confirmed on Monday that Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will not be rejoining the team for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a right hamstring injury.
Marsh flew back to Perth on April 12th for consultations with the Cricket Australia medical staff. The decision on his return was delayed to allow for a thorough reassessment and recovery plan.
“Unfortunately, Mitchell won’t be returning to the IPL this season,” Ponting said at a Delhi event. “There’s a deadline for bringing in replacement players, and Cricket Australia wanted him back in Australia to begin his recovery process. We facilitated his return as soon as possible.”
“Cricket Australia has been managing his rehabilitation for a few weeks now,” Ponting said. “I chatted with him lately, and it appears his recovery is taking longer than expected. However, I do not think this will affect his participation in the T20 World Cup.”
The 2024 T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin on June 1st in the USA and the West Indies.
Marsh, a key member of the Australian lineup, could only manage four appearances for DC this season. He scored 61 runs across three innings with a highest score of 23 and picked up one wicket. This is the second consecutive year DC has lost Marsh’s services mid-season due to injury. The all-rounder, who cost DC ₹6.5 crore, played only nine games in the 2023 season.
Despite the setback, DC is in contention for a postseason spot with six games left. They now sit seventh in the points standings, with three wins and five losses. Their most recent match ended in a loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday.
