Former Indian batsman Ambati Rayudu, a six-time IPL champion, recently shared his perspective on the distinct team cultures of Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Ambati Rayudu On Mumbai Indians Mentality
Rayudu, who began his IPL career with MI and secured three titles with them (2013, 2015, 2017), later switched to CSK where he collected three more trophies before retiring last year. Reflecting on the contrasting environments, Rayudu highlighted MI’s win-at-all-costs approach.
“Talking about culture, CSK focuses more on the process. Results don’t affect their mood much. MI is different. Winning is paramount for them. Their culture revolves around ‘jeetna hi hai’ (winning is a must). Winning is non-negotiable,” Rayudu told ESPNcricinfo.
Ambati Rayudu’s Take On CSK’s Environment
Rayudu suggested that while CSK fosters a more nurturing environment for player development, the intense pressure at MI can be overwhelming.
“Both franchises have distinct cultures, but both work hard. CSK offers a better environment where you can play for a longer period. Playing for MI for a long time could be mentally taxing,” he added.
Ambati Rayudu Gives Clarification
However, Rayudu recently took to social media to clarify his comments about MI, stating that they were “taken out of context.”
“My comments about Mumbai Indians were taken out of context. I simply meant that MI’s approach is different. They create a positive pressure environment that helps players develop and become well-rounded cricketers. Their track record speaks for itself in terms of producing talent for India. I cherish my eight years at MI and remain grateful for the experience,” Rayudu clarified on his social media platform (platform name can be replaced with “social media” or omitted).
Rayudu, acknowledging MI’s struggles under new captain Hardik Pandya this season, also offered a message of encouragement.
“MI, please win some games soon,” he concluded in his post.
