On Saturday, Lieutenant Inayat Vats was commissioned into the Indian Army. She joined the Military Intelligence Corps after completing the training at Chennai’s Officers Training Academy.
You can ask us, What’s so special about selecting a woman for the military? But there is definitely something special; that’s why we brought this news to you.
Here, the woman, Inayat, is not an ordinary woman who was commissioned into the military. She is the daughter of an ex-Army Major, Major Navneet Vats, who was killed in Jammu and Kashmir 20 years ago. She was just three years old when Mr. Navneet was martyred. Despite her father’s death in the Army, she decided to join the military, took it as a passion, worked so hard, and finally was commissioned into the military as a soldier.
At the passing parade, Ms. Vats wore the same olive-green uniform that her father once wore when he was serving in the military as a major. Sharing the news of Ms. Inayat’s joining, the Indian Army posted a picture of her on Platform X and wrote, “Welcome, Army Daughter Lieutenant Inayat Vats.” In the picture, Inayat’s mother and the late Navneet’s wife, Shivani Vats, are also seen standing behind her.
Nonetheless, Navneet Vats hailed from Chandigarh. He was commissioned into the 3 Gorkha Rifles Regiment’s 4th Battalion. In November 2003, Mr. Navneet was martyred in a counter-insurgency operation in J&K’s Srinagar.
Honoring his bravery and sacrifice, the Army announced a gallantry award, the “Sena Medal.” Despite her father being martyred in the Army, Inayat Vats, a graduate of Delhi University’s Lady Shri Ram College, decided to join the military after her education. Ms. Vats joined Chennai’s Officers’ Training Academy in April 2023 while she was pursuing her Master’s degree in Political Science at Delhi University.
