Bollywood’s Struggling Commercial Films
In recent years, Bollywood has witnessed an undeniable shift in trends. While commercial blockbusters like “Baby Jan” have crashed at the box office, cult filmmakers such as Rajkumar Hirani have found themselves delivering films that, despite their revered names, fail to create the same impact they once did. Take “Dunki”, for example. It received lukewarm responses, despite the filmmaker’s legacy.
Shah Rukh Khan’s superhits “Jawan” and “Pathaan” may have saved Bollywood’s face, but it’s clear: without these massive hits, the industry’s situation could have been far worse. The bigger shock, however, came when the dubbed Tollywood film “Pushpa 2: The Rule” claimed the title of the top-grossing movie, underlining the growing dominance of South Indian cinema. This trend highlights the shifting tastes of the audience, and Bollywood has begun to pay attention—perhaps a little too much.
Horror Trend Takes Over Bollywood
A prime example of Bollywood’s reaction to these shifts is the industry’s sudden and almost desperate embrace of the horror genre. As the appetite for thrilling, spine-chilling stories grows, filmmakers have rushed to meet the demand. Films like “Stree 2” and “Munjya” have become unexpected successes, while “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3”, despite a generally negative reception, still managed to rake in over 400 crores. This growing demand has not gone unnoticed. As a result, Maddock Films, a production banner known for its out-of-the-box thinking, has made an ambitious move—they are set to release no less than eight horror films over the next four years.
First Horror Film in the Maddock Universe: “Thama”
One of the key films to kickstart this horror frenzy is “Thama”, starring Rashmika Mandanna in a leading role. Scheduled for release this Diwali, it marks the first installment in what is expected to be a series of spine-tingling tales under the Maddock Films umbrella. This film alone will set the tone for the series, with audiences anticipating a chilling narrative that stays with them long after the credits roll.
The Growing Slate of Horror Films
But it doesn’t stop there. By the end of December, another horror film titled “Shakti Shalini” will be ready for its theatrical release. Following that, Bollywood fans can brace themselves for “Bhediya 2” in 2026, a sequel to the popular “Bhediya” starring Varun Dhawan. Speculation is rife that Akshay Kumar could also star in another one of these chilling narratives, adding further star power to the growing list of horror hits.
In 2027, the spookiness continues with the much-anticipated “Stree 3”, which will take the beloved franchise even further. Alongside “Stree 3”, “Maha Munjya” is also expected to hit the screens. While casting is still underway for both films, there’s no doubt that Bollywood is all in when it comes to expanding its horror repertoire.
Epic Crossover: “Pehla Maha Yudda” and “Dusra Maha Yudda”
By 2028, Maddock Films will bring us “Pehla Maha Yudda”, followed by “Dusra Maha Yudda” just two months later. These final films in the series promise an epic crossover, where all the characters from the Maddock Cinematic Horror Universe will unite. It’s a bold move that aims to take the horror genre in Bollywood to a new level, combining spine-chilling thrills with an interconnected cinematic universe that could rival even the Marvel or DC universes in terms of its reach and narrative complexity.
Will Horror Become a Lasting Trend in Bollywood?
As Bollywood embraces the paranormal, many wonder how long this trend will last. Will horror films continue to haunt the box office in the coming years, or is this just a passing phase? Only time—and perhaps the spirits themselves—will reveal the answer. What is clear, however, is that Bollywood filmmakers have found a new formula to keep the audience engaged, and it’s one that doesn’t involve the usual glamour or over-the-top action sequences.
This sudden obsession with horror films reflects a broader shift in the entertainment industry, where genre films, particularly those from the supernatural realm, have found a loyal fan base. Whether it’s ghosts, spirits, or paranormal events, Bollywood is betting big on the fact that audiences crave more than just the usual romance and drama. They want a thrill that will make their hearts race and their minds wonder about what lies beyond.
Future of Bollywood Horror: A Thrilling Ride Ahead
But as more horror films flood the market, one must ask: is this a sustainable trend or a temporary fixation? Only time will tell, but for now, Bollywood’s horror wave is here to stay, and it’s going to be a thrilling ride for moviegoers everywhere.
By embracing this haunting genre, Bollywood might just be setting a new standard for storytelling—one that blends fear, excitement, and a touch of the supernatural. With this growing slate of horror films, there’s no doubt that audiences will be eagerly awaiting every twist and turn that these chilling stories will bring.
Will this supernatural surge be the saving grace for Bollywood, or is it just the beginning of a larger transformation? Only the future will know, but for now, horror is undeniably in the spotlight.
