JD(U) Support To BJP: The Janata Dal (United), commonly known as JD(U), has put an end to speculations regarding its stance in Manipur by reaffirming its support for the N Biren Singh-led BJP government. The party dismissed recent claims of withdrawing support as “baseless” and attributed the confusion to unauthorized actions by its now-dismissed Manipur unit president, Kshetrimayum Biren Singh.
The JD(U) leadership took swift action by removing Kshetrimayum Biren Singh from his post for writing a letter that allegedly reiterated the party’s withdrawal of support without consulting the central leadership. The party cited “indiscipline” as the primary reason for his removal and assured continued alliance with the BJP at both the state and national levels.
JD(U) national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad addressed the issue, calling the letter “misleading” and asserting that the Manipur unit had acted independently without proper communication with the central leadership.

“The party has taken cognizance of this matter, and the president of our Manipur unit has been relieved of his duties. Our support to the NDA government in Manipur remains firm and unwavering. There was no communication with the central leadership before this letter was written, and the decision was made independently by the state unit,” said Prasad.
He further added, “Considering this an act of indiscipline, action has been taken against him. We remain committed to the NDA and will continue to contribute to the development of Manipur.”
What Is This Controversy?
The controversy erupted after Kshetrimayum Biren Singh wrote to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, stating that the JD(U) was reiterating its withdrawal of support from the BJP-led government. He also claimed that the party’s lone MLA, Md Abdul Nasir, would move to the Opposition benches.
In the letter, he referred to the defection of five out of six JD(U) MLAs to the BJP following the 2022 Manipur Assembly elections. He also linked the decision to the party’s previous alignment with the opposition INDIA bloc, which had raised concerns about the party’s future course of action.
While the JD(U) leadership has now clarified its position, the letter initially raised eyebrows, considering the party’s crucial role as a BJP ally in Bihar and at the Centre.
BJP’s Comfortable Majority in Manipur
Despite the confusion, the BJP holds a strong majority in the 60-member Manipur Assembly. The party commands 37 seats and enjoys additional support from five Naga People’s Front MLAs and three Independent legislators, ensuring a stable government.
The JD(U)’s clarification brings much-needed relief to the BJP, which faced criticism over the alleged withdrawal claims. Political analysts believe that the BJP’s stronghold in Manipur remains intact despite occasional turbulence caused by coalition partners.
Comparisons with Past Political Developments
This development comes on the heels of a similar situation last year when the Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP) withdrew support from the BJP government in Manipur. However, JD(U) leaders have distanced themselves from any comparisons, emphasizing their strong alliance with the BJP across multiple states, including Bihar and Manipur.
JD(U) leaders have reassured party workers and the public that their focus remains on governance and the welfare of the people of Manipur. “We are committed to the development and stability of the state, and our alliance with the NDA remains stronger than ever,” a senior party leader commented.
Future Prospects for JD(U) and BJP Alliance
Looking ahead, the JD(U)-BJP alliance is expected to continue working towards their shared goal of ensuring development and maintaining law and order in the northeastern state. Both parties have expressed confidence in their coalition, despite occasional challenges arising from internal differences.
Political experts believe that as long as both parties work in tandem and prioritize the needs of the people, their partnership will remain strong and beneficial for the region.

Conclusion
The JD(U)’s clarification regarding its continued support for the BJP government in Manipur has put an end to speculation and reaffirmed the strength of the NDA alliance in the state. Despite internal differences and unauthorized actions by state-level leaders, the party’s central leadership remains firmly aligned with its national partner.
With political stability being a key focus for both parties, the people of Manipur can expect continued governance and development efforts in the coming months.
