The Delhi election witnessed a sensational result as the former Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal faced a humiliating loss. Kejriwal, who has been the face of the party since it’s inception, contested from the New Delhi constituency. He was defeated by BJP candidate Parvesh Verma. He defeated Kejriwal by over 4 thousand votes.
AAP workers were shocked with this result. They never thought that Kejriwal would be defeated in this election. That too, when the party found sympathy from Delhi people after Kejriwal was arrested and sent to jail in the now-scraped Delhi liquor policy case. Another accused in the case, Delhi former Deputy Chief Minister and key AAP leader Manish Sisodia, also lost the poll. Sisodia contested from the Jangpura constituency and lost by a margin of over 600 votes. In his case too, the sympathy he got after going to jail failed to sway the election in his favor.
BJP candidate Tarvinder Singh defeated Sisodia in Jangpura. But the first victory in the assembly election results went to AAP. The first result was declared in Kondli constituency. Kuldeep Kumar, who contested on an AAP ticket, won in this constituency. Kuldeep won by a huge margin of 6,293 votes against BJP candidate Priyanka Gautam. Meanwhile, the BJP opened its account with the victory of Abhay Verma in the Lakshmi Nagar constituency.
Kejriwal On Delhi Elections, His Defeat
Kejriwal responded to this crushing defeat for the first time. He said that he humbly accepts the verdict of the people and will abide by the people’s decision. He expressed his congratulations to the BJP for winning the elections.
He made it clear that he entered politics only to serve the people and did not feel that his spirit would be dampened by these results. Kejriwal explained that he thanked the Aam Aadmi Party leaders and workers who fought hard in the assembly elections.
He revealed that significant changes have been brought in many sectors including drinking water and electricity in Delhi in the last ten years. He stated that even if we lose the elections, we will be with the people. Kejriwal released a video message to this effect.
